The Every Tail Play Personality System®

A cat who stalks and pounces. A dog who lives to run. A rabbit who loves to investigate every new corner. A reptile who waits patiently before making its move.

Different animals. Different instincts. Different approaches to play.

Yet so often, pet enrichment is approached with a one-size-fits-all mindset. Toys are chosen by species, size or appearance, without always considering the individual animal using them.

At Every Tail®, we believe there’s a better way.

Introducing The Every Tail Play Personality System® — our original, trademarked framework designed to help owners recognise how their pets naturally play, explore and engage with the world around them.

Because when you understand what makes your pet tick, you can make more thoughtful choices about how they play.

What is the Play Personality System?

The Every Tail Play Personality System® is an enrichment framework built around one simple idea:

Understanding how an animal likes to play can help us choose enrichment that better reflects its individual interests and instincts.

Not every cat wants to chase. Not every dog wants to retrieve. Not every small furry wants to dig, and not every reptile interacts with its environment in the same way.

Even animals of the same species, breed or age can have very different preferences.

Our system brings together 16 distinct Play Personalities across four animal categories:

• Cats

• Dogs

• Reptiles

• Small furries

Each personality represents a different approach to play, exploration and enrichment.

It’s not about putting animals into boxes or claiming that every animal will behave in exactly the same way. It’s about giving owners a useful starting point for recognising individual preferences and discovering enrichment that may suit them.

Meet the 16 Play Personalities

Cat Play Personalities

Cats are natural hunters, explorers, climbers and problem-solvers. But the way those instincts show up can vary enormously from one cat to another.

🌟 The Adventurer

💠 The Acrobat

For the agile movers who love to leap, climb, balance and show off their coordination. Their idea of fun often involves height, movement and a little aerial ambition.

Small Furry Play Personalities

Small furries have individual preferences and natural behaviours that deserve just as much thought and attention as those of cats and dogs.

For the curious little explorers who enjoy investigating their surroundings. New spaces, objects and experiences offer plenty to discover.

🔎 The Tracker

For the inquisitive investigators who enjoy following scents, exploring trails and discovering what’s hidden.

Why does understanding play personality matter?

Enrichment should be about more than keeping an animal occupied.

It should offer opportunities to engage with the world in ways that are meaningful to them.

A toy that encourages chasing may be exciting for one cat but overlooked by another. A puzzle may keep one dog happily occupied, while another would much rather explore a new scent trail.

Understanding these differences can help owners think beyond what a product looks like and consider what it actually offers their animal.

It can help you ask better questions:

• Does this encourage natural behaviours?

• Does it offer physical or mental stimulation?

• Does it provide an opportunity to explore, investigate or problem-solve?

• Is it suited to my pet’s individual interests?

• Does it offer something different from the enrichment they already have?

The goal isn’t to find one perfect toy. It’s to create a more varied, thoughtful approach to enrichment.

How does the Play Personality System work?

Our Play Personality Quiz is a great place to start.

By answering questions about your pet’s preferences, habits and approach to play, you can discover which of our Play Personalities most closely reflects their interests.

Your result can help you explore products and enrichment ideas that may complement the way your pet likes to engage with their surroundings.

But remember: animals are individuals.

Your pet may show characteristics of more than one personality. Their preferences may also change with age, experience, environment and confidence.

Think of your result as a guide, not a fixed label.

The thinking behind the system

The Every Tail Play Personality System® was developed from our belief that animals deserve to be understood as individuals.

Inspired by the very different personalities of Cairo and Rain, the two Bengal cats who helped spark the idea behind Every Tail, the framework grew from observing how differently animals can approach the world around them.

We wanted to move beyond simply categorising products by species and create a more considered way of thinking about play.

The result is an original framework that brings together instinct, individual preferences and enrichment.

It isn’t a veterinary assessment, a scientific diagnosis or a substitute for understanding your animal’s individual needs. It’s an accessible way to start thinking more carefully about what makes their play meaningful.

And it’s something we continue to build on as Every Tail grows.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Is the Every Tail Play Personality System® unique to Every Tail?

A: Yes. The Every Tail Play Personality System® is our original, trademarked framework. It was developed by Every Tail to help owners explore the different ways animals approach play, exploration and enrichment.

Q: How many Play Personalities are there?

A: There are currently 16 Play Personalities across four animal categories: four for cats, four for dogs, four for reptiles and four for small furries.

Q: Can my pet have more than one Play Personality?

A: Absolutely. Animals are individuals, and their interests don’t always fit neatly into one category. Your result is intended as a helpful starting point for understanding their preferences, rather than a definitive label.

Q: Can my pet’s Play Personality change?

A: Preferences can evolve over time. Age, confidence, environment, health and experience can all influence how an animal engages with play. It’s worth revisiting their enrichment needs as they grow and change.

Q: Are Play Personalities based on breed?

A: No. Breed can influence certain tendencies, but individual animals can have very different interests and preferences. Our framework looks beyond breed and appearance to consider how an animal likes to play and explore.

Q: Is the system suitable for all animals?

A: Our current framework covers cats, dogs, reptiles and small furries. We’re also developing a dedicated bird collection, with an approach informed by the particular behaviours and needs of birds. Birds are not currently included in the 16 Play Personalities.

Q: Does the Play Personality System replace professional behavioural or veterinary advice?

A: No. The system is an enrichment guide, not a diagnostic tool or replacement for veterinary care or qualified behavioural support. Always consider your animal’s health, individual needs and safety when choosing enrichment.

Q: How can I find products for my pet’s Play Personality?

A: Start with our Play Personality Quiz, then explore the relevant collections and product recommendations across Every Tail. We curate enrichment with different interests, instincts and approaches to play in mind.
