You don’t need to buy a fancy cat tree or set up a complicated puzzle feeder to enrich your cat’s day. Sometimes, all it takes is moving a chair.
Yep—simply rearranging your space can spark a wave of curiosity, especially for high-energy or highly observant cats. Cairo and Rain would get the zoomies the moment I'd shift their scratching post or if I'd lay their cat tree down on the floor, and even if I moved one of the dining chairs. All they needed was a new angle and they were off—zooming, climbing, exploring like it was a brand-new playground.
I used to move their tunnel to completely different spots around the flat —sometimes even out onto the balcony (supervised, of course). Instant zoomies. It was like the whole world had changed. And in their minds, it probably had.
✨ Why It Works
Cats are natural explorers. But life indoors can get… predictable. Shifting their surroundings—just a little—reignites their instinct to investigate and re-map their territory.
To us, it’s “the chair.”
To them, it’s “the new lookout spot,” “a shortcut to the top of the cupboards,” or “a stepping stone to the shelf that looks like a good climb.”
Change its location, and suddenly the whole map updates. And that means new choices, new angles, and fresh excitement.
🐾 Easy Ways to Try It
• Move a chair your catto likes to snooze on or the stool they perch on to a new spot
• Place their scratching post by a different wall or lay it down on the floor
• Shift a tunnel, cardboard box to another room
• Place a cat bed on top of an elevated surface near a new window for a fresh view
• If safe to do so, try placing a favourite object (like a tunnel) in an unusual spot—like a sunny balcony or hallway
You don’t need to move the whole house—small changes go a long way.
A Note on Cat Personality
Not every cat will respond the same way. But high-energy, curious, or playful cats often love novelty. If your cat tends to be more cautious, try introducing changes gradually, and pair them with treats or play to help them feel safe.
